A Night Under the Stars - Pops 2009
May 2009 - Marshfield

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Maria Medeiros, Jim Thomas and the Marshfield High School Music Department gave us what some people are calling the best Pops ever!

The 2009 MHS Pops Concert was everything you could hope for and more. From the decorations, to the food and of course the incredible talent on the stage, the crowd was dazzled from start to finish. New this year, and a huge success, was risers donated by Jim Fitzgerald and family. It was quite an undertaking for the Pops crew to put this together.  Being the first time they’d used it and unfamiliar with the set up process, it took a long time to get to the finished product, but it was well worth the effort. Everyone agreed the affect was incredible.

This year may have had the largest crowd yet with a total of 77 tables holding 8 guests each, all sold out ahead of time. Maria Medeiros and her Pops Committee turned the MHS gym into a twinkling star studded Gala Event.  Each table held a beautiful center piece donated by the Kelly Family. There were sparkling trees adorned in silver ribbon. The “senior wall” traditionally decorated for the music program seniors, held a giant star for each graduating member, with their picture adorning the center. On the menu were cheese and crackers and sparkling sugar cookies cut out in the shape of, you guessed it, stars! And all this, before the music even began.

The Program started off with the Concert Band, directed by Mr. James Thomas and Mr. Scott Brenner, performing music from the musical “Wicked” and a John Williams piece. Wind Ensemble then took over, entertaining us with “Prairie Song” and selections from “Les Miserables”. In the words of Bob Keuther, they were “Awesome!”

Combined Orchestra, directed by Laura Ridarelli gave us three numbers, “OB LA DI, OB LA DA”, “Colors of the Wind” and” I’m a Believer” that were all fun. Their final number, “Fields of Gold” was a pick from the seniors who wanted it as a “good-bye” song. It was simple and beautiful and heart breaking all at the same time. Well done musicians.

Treble Choir, lead by Ms. Kara Reinshagen, serenaded us with beautiful renditions of “The Man I Love”, “A Thousand Miles’ and “Only Hope”. Next came Concert Choir, getting everyone fired up with “Build Me Up Buttercup” and then getting slow and sultry with “When I Fall in Love”. Last for the singers were the Marshalairs doing four numbers, The fun and creatively done “Take on Me” was a huge hit., “Mama Who Bore Me” and “She will Be Loved” were done with extraordinary sweetness. They ended their performance with “Goodnight Sweetheart” and received a standing ovation (as did all the performances).

The night ended as it does every year with Jazz II and then Jazz I  performing some of their best selections from throughout the year. Students are encouraged to get u p and dance (and they do!!).

It’s important to mention that all money generated this night goes directly to the music scholarship fund for next year. And this night absolutely could not happen without the generosity of area businesses. The Pops Committee would like to thank Shaws Market,  Roche Bros., Stop & Shop, and Pepperidge Farms for their generous donations of food and drinks for this special evening.. And to Roche Brothers, Seaside Homes, Scituate Federal Savings, Bank of America, Rockland Federal Credit Union, Dr. Stephen Kane, Hubbard Plumbing and Heating, Damon, Tropham & Company, Dr. James Judge, Tedeschi Food Shops and Boston Bagel  whose continued support throughout the year make nights like this possible.

And most of all, congratulations to all the talented musicians for a job well done.
