Spring Concerts Full of Surprises
April, 2009 - Marshfield

The Marshfield High School Spring Concerts took place this year on Tuesday, April 7 and Wednesday April 8 at the Furnace Brook Middle School. Parents, students, family and friends were all treated to a variety of music ranging from the haunting and beautiful, “O’Magnum Mysterium” to a rousing rendition of “Take me out to the Ballgame” but it was not without a few surprises.

As wonderful as the music was for both of these shows, what impressed me most was the versatility of these young musicians. I had the pleasure of attending the second show on Wednesday night and watched as Mr. Thomas tried to stall the show a bit, while he waited for the rest of his musicians to come in from a delayed ball game held down the Cape. Knowing they were only at Exit 3, he had a lot of stalling to do. Just as Mr. Thomas threatened to start telling jokes, (not that!) several of the Marshalairs got up and did an impromptu performance of “Coney Island Baby”. And of course, the crowd loved it.

When Mr. Thomas could delay no longer, the Wind Ensemble began. The band was into their second song, when the “delayed” musicians literally ran onto the stage one by one. These girls still had their ball uniforms on. Faces red, obviously exhausted, they just picked up their instruments and started playing. I have never seen anything like it before.  What struck me most was how talented and focused you would have to be, to be able to walk in, in front of a large crowd, and join a band that’s performing an already difficult number, and just start playing.

Bravo young musicians, bravo.
